Moncalieri Castle
Moncalieri is a municipality located in the province of Turin in the Italian Piedmont. Located just 9 km south of the city of Turin is famous for its magnificent castle, declared a World Heritage Site in 1997.

Moncalieri Castle was registered in all the royal residences of the House of Savoy. Built in the twelfth century and expanded centuries later, this monument now stands in the Piazza Baden Baden and is a major tourist attraction.

Originally, it was a fortress built by Thomas I of Savoy, on top of a hill in order to dominate access to Turin from the south. However, when it lost its military character, became a residence. This was in the mid-seventeenth century, when Yolanda de Valois, wife of Duke Amadeus IX, turned it into a space for leisure.

Already in 1798, was the first castle occupied by the French army, and remained in their hands until 1814, when it was returned to Victor Emmanuel I. He and his son were ordered to turn it into a place of residence for the young royals. Read the rest of this entry »
